New Year's Memes

For the past several years I've done these memes looking back at the previous year, so I figured I'd keep up with tradition. Here is a brief look at my life in 2013.

Random Meme

So arabian gave me a meme the other day, and I got sick, so I didn't end up doing it. Better late than never.

Comment on this post with the word THUNDERCATS and I will choose six interests from your profile. You will then explain what they mean/why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.

She gave me --

- ballet: When I was a little girl I used to watch all these old MGM movies with my mom, and I fell in love with the grace and beauty of ballet dancers like Cyd Charisse and Vera Ellen. So when I got older, I started taking ballet lessons, and I ended up being in dance for 9 years. I still love to watch MGM movies, and I also love watching actual ballets like The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, the Nutcracker, etc. Ballet is a beautiful art form that is slowly fading away as everyone latches on to the flashy moves of hip hop and the like. *sniffs*

- Donna Noble: I admit, I didn't like Donna Noble in her first outing in "The Runaway Bride," but I thought she was an absolute breath of fresh air in series four. She played off the Tenth Doctor beautifully, and it was such a joy to see a companion not in love with the Doctor! Catherine Tate's comedic timing was pure gold, but she also played the dramatic parts with equal aplomb. Donna is definitely tied with Rose Tyler as my favorite New Who companion. <3

- Logan/Marie: My introduction to the X-Men universe (and basically all comic book verses) was with the 2001 movie X-Men. I fell in love with the tender relationship of Logan and Marie presented in the films. Here was this tough-as-nails-take-no-prisoners-kick-ass man carrying a truckload of bitter and depressed secrets, and yet he turned into a gentle protector whenever Marie was around. And Marie had such a debilitating crush on him. It was just so cute. Of course, then I ended up researching the comics and discovering that while Wolverine and Rogue have a flirty banter going on, they are not "canon". But at that point, I didn't care. I still ship 'em. I hope they have some moments in the upcoming movie Days of Future Passed, especially now that Rogue is of-age and can flirt with Wolverine without people screaming about pedophilia. -_-

- Maroon 5: I loved Maroon 5 before they and frontrunner Adam Levine became ubiquitous in the pop world and their concert ticket prices went from $50 for awesome center seats to $120 for crappy nosebleed seats *notbitter*. I fell in love with their first album Songs about Jane, and for every album after that I was one of the first in line to buy it. I was able to go to a concert with them right after the release of their third album Hands All Over but before the release of the single "Moves Like Jagger," which skyrocketed them to infamy. It was an awesome experience. Adam Levine et al. are true showmen. They were charismatic and entertaining, and they brought the entire stadium to its feet. Hands down, my favorite concert experience (though I'm going to see Train, Gavin Degraw and the Script in a few weeks, so we'll see if they'll top Maroon 5).

- The Beatles: The BEST band in the entire history of Rock music. Period. End of discussion. If you don't like the Beatles, there is no hope for you. I am a true blue fan. I know so much random trivia about the Beatles. I've seen all of their movies (except Let it Be which has never been released in my lifetime) I've listened to all of their songs, including the really obscure stuff found on Anthology. I'm just a weeeee bit obsessed. :D Favorite Beatle is George Harrison, if you hadn't figure out from my icon.

- William Shakespeare: One of my favorite writers. I read him and go see his plays just for fun. That's right, I flew to London to see David Tennant and Catherine Tate in a Shakespearean play. If the play hadn't been Shakespeare, I probably wouldn't have gone. It's srs bsns. :P If you tell me that Shakespeare did not exist, or was the amalgamation of several different writers, or some other crack theory, I will hurt you. Shakespeare was awesome and smart and witty and talented and relevant. And he still is all of those things 400ish years later. Bow to the Bard.

*BIG SIGH* I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while. My university decided to screw me over in 40 different ways, and I've been working hard to resolve those issues. Stupid Real Life getting in the way of Creativity. ;)

One Step Closer: Cameron’s POVCollapse )

RAGE is RAGEY

I don't usually post anything about Moffat's Doctor Who, because I know some people on my f-list like his work, and I wouldn't want them to think my dislike of Moffat translated to a dislike of them and their personal tastes. BUT I have so much RAGE for this promo picture:

WTF RAGE

It's not just the fact that once again we've given into the sexist idea of the big, strapping man carrying the weaker woman who's just fainted/died. After all RTD did that in Season 3 episode 1 with Ten carrying Martha, and I had an issue with it then as well, especially since Martha was being a complete MORON in not unplugging the machine BEFORE doing CPR on the Doctor. *facepalm* (But I digress). This is offensive in its own right, but I probably wouldn't have such an issue with it if this wasn't Doctor Who we're talking about.

But this image does not in any way represent the Doctor Who I know and love. This is a picture straight out of Hollywood with its glamorized and melodramatic shots of the Hero, barely a scratch on him, carrying the swooning woman as big explosions go off around them. That image has nothing to do with the 1960s Doctor who was a curmudgeonly old man living in a junkyard while his granddaughter attended British school just for the fun of it. It also has nothing to do with a crazy, bug-eyed man with wild hair and a ten foot scarf, or even a solemn, big-eared Doctor in a leather coat getting over some serious PTSD. What this image DOES remind me of is the Tenth Doctor walking through fire in slow motion as the cruise ship he's on crashes around him. Yes, remember Voyage of the Damned? Remember how panned it was?!? And I'm pretty damned sure RTD meant that whole episode to be a wild spoof of the Hollywood disaster movies of the 1970s and wasn't meant to be taking seriously. Yet it was still cheesy and out of place in the world of Doctor Who. So why are returning to this mediocrity?

The thing that really pisses me off is how many people are eating this promo picture up like it's the best thing EVER, especially the Americans, because give us a hot girl in skin tight clothes and explosions and we're happy. *snarks* This is the Doctor Who that is popular in the States. This is the Doctor Who that gets recognition in Entertainment Weekly, the biggest entertainment magazine in the US. This is the Doctor Who that gets praised by all the US critics. Not the 1960s version with its god-awful special effects and sets (even by 1960's standards) but its incredible warmth and emphasis on character development, not the 1970s version with its oh so retro costumes and music but ingenious mythology, and not RTD's homage in the mid 2000s which combined the best (and some of the worst) of all eras. No, we only praise this version, the one that least resembles anything good about show, the one with the least emphasis on characters and relationships, and least concerned with actually explaining a damn plot-line. This is what we glorify. Well America, if this is what you want, you can have it. I'll stick to REAL British programming.

*IMPORTANT UPDATE: PLEASE READ*
at All U.S. Internet Providers will be policing downloads by July 12, 2012All U.S. Internet Providers will be policing downloads by July 12, 2012

"File-sharers, beware: By July 12, major US Internet service providers (ISPs) will voluntarily begin serving as copyright police for the entertainment industry, according to Cary Sherman, chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The so-called “six-strikes” plan is said to be one of the most effective anti-piracy efforts ever established in the US."

The article goes on to give details. After six notices, internet providers will decide to throttle a person's internet speed, or cut it off altogether. I don't know if they will crack down on torrents only, or if it is up to the internet provider. I get the sense it is up to the internet provider. So some people could get away with downloading non torrents, while others might get their internet service cut off. I urge you to click it and read, as we all know people who download.

No more downloading eps of your favorite shows for vidding, gifs, or fanfiction art. No more downloading screencaps possibly. I'm so sorry my friends. I don't even know if BT Guard will work to protect you, but I would google it if I were you. It is a professional service that supposedly can protect you from the invasive eyes of your internet provider.

Just, my friends, please make each other aware. Please be aware of the date JULY 12TH. Mark your calendar and double check with your internet provider by then. If you start receiving notices of downloaded activity, this is why. And your internet service could be throttled or cut off.

Fox News confirms this:
